They say entrepreneurship is the about crazy highs and terrible lows and this book paints the full ugly picture of what life is like in the daunting face of disaster. He outlines the hardest decisions he had to make and the awful situations you find yourself in. He addresses all the major screw ups that have occurred during his time leading billion $ corporations and how his team made decisions to turn things around, or screw things up further. ![]() Why is it so good? Most business books focus on how to do things correctly, whilst Ben acknowledges upfront there is no such thing as a perfect business and however much planning you make, screw ups will inevitably happen. It’s reached the point now that if I ask for a book recommendation for business advice, I add ‘other than the obvious Hard Thing About Things’. The Hard Thing About Hard Things has been the most recommended book to me from numerous conversations with great entrepreneurs. ![]()

![]() Their most recent album is entitled Neon Bible. Perhaps you are familiar with the indie band Arcade Fire. ![]() ![]() Here are some posts I have done on this series: Francis Schaeffer’s “How should we then live?” Video and outline of episode 10 “Final Choices” , episode 9 “The Age of Personal Peace and Affluence”, episode 8 “The Age of Fragmentation”, episode 7 “The Age of Non-Reason” , episode 6 “The Scientific Age” , episode 5 “The Revolutionary Age” , episode 4 “The Reformation”, episode 3 “The Renaissance”, episode 2 “The Middle Ages,”, and episode 1 “The Roman Age,” . Schaeffer’s central premise is: when we base society on the Bible, on the infinite-personal God who is there and has spoken, this provides an absolute by which we can conduct our lives and by which we can judge society. He also makes extensive references to art and architecture as a means of showing how these movements reflected changing patterns of thought through time. ![]() I love the works of Francis Schaeffer and I have been on the internet reading several blogs that talk about Schaeffer’s work and the work below by Mark Peach was really helpful. Schaeffer’s film series “How should we then live? Wikipedia notes, “According to Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live traces Western history from Ancient Rome until the time of writing (1976) along three lines: the philosophic, scientific, and religious. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He is neither roughed up, hurt, nor taken advantage of during his initial adventures in London. Trent runs away from home, but the worst he experiences in his first nights is having his laptop stolen. Faced with this familial crisis, Trent runs away to London. Trent's father loses his job, his mother loses access to her health benefits and his younger sister is unable to study online. Losing the internet nearly destroys his family, which depends on the internet for their livelihood. But thanks to a draconian copyright law, Trent's illegal downloading and copyright infringement causes his family to lose their internet access for an entire year, with no appeal. Set in the United Kingdom in the not-too-distant future (perhaps two or three decades), Pirate Cinema tells the story of Trent McCauley, a sixteen year old British kid and mashup artist who spends his free time illegally downloading videos of his favorite actor, editing and mashing up those videos, and reposting them online as his own creations. And it is his broader call to arms against the corporate involvement in the lawmaking process. It is his political manifesto against draconian copyright laws that stifle creativity and divert resources from issues that may matter a great deal more. Pirate Cinema is well-known internet "influencer" Cory Doctorow's latest young adult dystopian novel and call to arms. ![]() ![]() ![]() When those shirts proved to be popular, too, we started thinking about other “All my friends are _” ideas that would lend themselves to T-shirts. Based on the response, we figured we were on to something so we created new dino-designs with the same phrase. Later that summer, though, we remembered the idea and created a small print run of 50 white T-shirts with a dinosaur saying, “All my friends are dead,” which sold out almost immediately. ![]() Also: always start with a button.) We traded the button away for some sort of camp good or service, perhaps a massage, or some snacks, and went on with our lives. (Note to creative types: fellow counselors are always a great focus-group. At one point, we wrote the phrase “All my friends are dead” on an image of a dinosaur and our fellow counselors seemed to like it. We were working as counselors at a performing arts camp back in 2002 and - in between doing our actual jobs, which included “keeping children unhurt and alive” - we bought a button-maker and starting creating phrases and images that we thought were funny for buttons. J+A: All of this started with a button-maker, actually. ![]() ![]() The author grabbed my attention and took me along on a journey where there are cattle rustlers, a teenage boy who has lost both parents, one single aunt and a man who will do everything he can to protect the innocent. ![]() There is nothing better than feeling like you are part of a story. All opinions are my own, and I am voluntarily leaving this review. I received a review copy of this book from Celebrate Lit through NetGalley. In Honor's Defense is the third book in the "Hangar's Horsemen Series," and can be read independently even though it is generally best to read the books in chronological sequence. A narrative with a faith message is an ideal arrangement. ![]() Luke became the group's "preacher" when he began praying for them and sharing Scripture, as you would have predicted from his nickname. Damaris and Luke were perfect foils for each other. Luke “Preach” Davenport, who was one of Hangar's Horsemen, embodied the Horsemen's image by being all business and not tolerating any guff or nonsense. Damaris Baxter was a strong woman who wouldn't tolerate a lot of antics and was willing to risk life and limb for those she loved. When it’s coupled with romance and western panache, then tossing in Texas, to boot, well it can’t be beat! Historical fiction is by far my preferred genre. In Honor's Defense is one of my favorites. Karen Witemeyer's books are always enjoyable. ![]() ![]() In The Undead Day One, Howie is the main character. If I were her I wouldn’t have the strength and courage to stand up against my mother and survive if I got kicked out of my own house. When she had a fight with her stepmother, who was over controlling CC, she stood up and fights for her rights. I greatly admire the character of Ye Xian (CC) because of her courage.
